The Outback - 1000km - Day 7

The Outback 2014 trip was coming to an end, which meant that we had two days to travel 2000km from Birdsville to Sydney. A 1000km of empty roads were ahead....

Sunrise on the road to Windorah

A month ago I sold my Land Rover Discovery Tdi and opted to purchase the Land Cruiser Prado (see blog notes).  I was a little apprehensive taking my new vehicle on such a big trip especially as I had yet to figure out the electrics for the fridge, the built in tyre compressor and give the vehicle a shake down trip.  All previous owners get to know how and why they wired a vehicle for accessories and gaining an understanding of electrics take some time.  One day 1, the fridge started blinking a red warning light, which the Waeco owners manual indicated to be a low amp warning.  On day2 the issue disappeared and did not return! Small gremlins like the fridge warning light need to be sorted before a trip and not whilst the trip is progressing!

I found that the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado D4D is a very capable overland tourer combined with excellent city comfort and certainly offered a very pleasant drive regardless of the terrain.   Admittedly, most owners of a Prado purchase it for the 8-seat option rather than it offroad capability.   Fuel consumption was average at 12l/100km.
The interior load space was in abundance and the Outback rear drawers and cage worked well.  The one drawer contained the crockery and cutlery and the 2nd drawer the food stuff.

The roofrack only had the 2nd spare tyre, sand ladders and the sand flag.
1000km & 5-cars spotted the whole day!
